REC: No Substitute for Words by Lila
Title: NO SUBSTITUTE FOR WORDS
Author: LILA
Pairing: Michael/Nikita
Rating: Adult
Length: 10,552 words
Content Notes: Late season 4
Author Links: Author at The Split Personality
Summary: Michael and Nikita get stuck in a Norwegian cabin during white out blizzard conditions while returning from a mission. With Michael suffering a concussion and Nikita trying to maintain a distance, Nikita's inevitable betrayal looms between them as Michael makes an attempt to close the distance between them.
Why this must be read: This is one of my all time favorite stories. This is a late season 4 story so we are nearing the big reveal of the season 4 finale. The tension between Michael and Nikita is almost a third character. Michael knows that there's something wrong and Nikita is increasingly trying to minimize the hurt by pulling away from Michael. All this causes nothing but pain all around. Michael's attempt to connect with Nikita emotionally is heartbreaking in how useless it ultimately is. Everything has been set into motion and by submitting to Michael's sexual advances and his clear love for her, Nikita sinks further into self hatred. When I first started reading LFN fic this was exactly the type of season 4 story I was looking for. It checked off all the boxes. I cannot recommend this story enough. It's a wonderful piece of writing that I come back to again and again.
Excerpt: Entering the room where Michael was sleeping, she peeled off her mission clothes leaving only her silk long underwear. She never would have believed that something as thin as silk could keep one warm, but she had been sold on it a long time ago. Belgium came to mind. Sliding into the bed and feeling the warmth of Michael's body next to her she forced herself to forget about Belgium.Curling her long body next to Michael's, she allowed herself the luxury of resting her head next to his. She moved close to him, trying not to disturb him, and he responded by simply rolling onto his side and pulling her close. She was certain he was still asleep, but her physical nearness caused his instinctive reaction.
Push him away, don't let him. But she found herself scooting closer to his body, reveling in his warmth. God, he was warm.
"Repeat," she replied, not wanting to hear those words ever.
His Mick persona answered, "One month, it's a go lollipop. Cheerio."
In one month she would betray everyone she ever loved in Section, especially the sleeping figure beside her. A bullet would do right about now, but instead Michael snaked his hand over her abdomen and pulled her closer. His breath warmed her neck, his embrace tight and unforgiving. If only he knew. Exhaustion winning out over castigation she drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.

Edited to add: If anyone knows where to find Lila's other stories, please let me know. I've seen a fairly recent request (15 years after the story postings) on the old forums asking about the continuation of two WIPs (The Beginning of the End and With Charity Towards None) that the poster had just read. I can't seem to find them. Apparently they were posted in the AU forum.

She closed her eyes, waiting for Shakespeare's sweet relief of sleep. Instead, she thought about the phone call she received an hour before leaving for this mission.
"It's a go," Mr. Jones said."Repeat," she replied, not wanting to hear those words ever.
