author’s note: In reading LFN fic I repeatedly came across the concept of Michael going into "machine mode". It describes the very focused headspace that he enters during missions and how very methodical, indiscriminate, and detached he gets when the success of a mission is paramount. I rather liked how prevalent it became in a fandom. The show referred to Michael's approach as "primal", but I don't feel like "machine mode" was an inaccurate description of him. It did get me wondering about how something like that would play out. What if Michael was an actual machine? I started jotting things down for this story back in the fall of 2021, so not quite three years ago, but close. It was one of my rotating stories that I had open in the background of my laptop. When I realized, that it had been idle for such a long time, a decided to commit it to the 13th round of the [community profile] smallfandombang.

One of the perk of the bigbang is getting paired up with an artist. The mood boards that are embedded within the story were created by the wonderful [personal profile] pattrose. Even though she wasn't familiar with the series, it was such a joy to work with her. Her selection of quotes was an absolutely inspired direction to go in. As I was slowly revising my draft of the story, I would often go back to her work to help me refocus on the themes of the story. I never expected them to be the asset they eventually became. She has her own post on AO3 with her boards compiled and encourage everyone to drop by and drop her a kudo and/or a comment.

Summary:
"By the time it was midnight in San Francisco, it was already January 1st for her, but no matter how many hours separated them, the new year never really started for her until it started for him."

Why this must be read: I adore this type of post series story. There's an appealing poignancy to it that hits the spot with LFN. Nikita and Michael are still physically apart, but they're never far from each other's minds. It takes the promise from the finale of Michael eventually returning to join Nikita and explores it. Equally so, it explores the possibility that if they bide their time, the promise of a life outside together might be in their future as well. Both scenarios are equally fascinating. This is just a snapshot of their present day. Their future remains to be written, but it's definitely going to be with them together.

Excerpt: But maybe, just maybe, she'd improved Section so she could leave it with a happy heart when the time came.

Michael hadn't said anything else, and she knew he was worried that she'd rebuffed his idea. Each year, she got better at reading the transcontinental silence.

"I'm sure my family would love to see you," she said. "But I hear that San --" she caught herself just in time, "that Albany is lovely. I'm accumulating quite a bit of vacation time myself, and a long visit might be just the thing." Long enough to last the rest of their lives, if she had anything to say about it.

"Do you think you could get away?" The hope in his voice wrapped around her like the strong grasp of his arms.

"It's one of the benefits of being your own boss. I think I can make it happen." She glanced at the timer she'd started when the call connected. 14:30. "I'm afraid I have to run; it's about time for me to head to work."

author’s note: This story was inspired by this lovely fanvid by vedavanda that interweaves clips of Peta Wilson's very glam Bally Fitness commercial with B-roll from an interview with Roy Dupuis where he's working on his boat. There are also clips of him with his cello. The worlds of both clips are so vastly different, but they really work with this version of Hooverphonic's song "Vinegar & Salt", which heavily incorporates a cello into the musical arrangement. I'd never considered writing an AU until I saw the fanvid. The concept was so intriguing. Even though I started this story two years ago, what really kick started it was one weekend early on where this story grew from a couple of hundred words to way over 10,000. That completely floored me and it also gave me the motivation to delve further into this world. It also has an obscene amount of smut. I'm almost a little embarrassed by it. Almost.

Summary: Nikita and Michael's egress following the tank scene in "Hand to Hand".

Why this must be read: This post episode story provides such a lovely snapshot of Michael and Nikita's rapidly evolving relationship. I love the vulnerability of this scene as Michael confesses his fear of Nikita losing her fight to the death. Mid season three is trying to inch the romantic relationship between Nikita and Michael forward. While this episode isn't particularly known for its shippiness, Michael's hesitation to follow his orders, really does exude extreme concern for Nikita's fate in the fight. Ranma's decision to focus on that moment could not be more perfect. In my mind, this fic is canon.

Excerpt: Without conscious thought he wraps his arms around her hips and lays his cheek on her stomach.

Stunned, Nikita stops mid-movement, unconsciously holding her breath.

"I could not move." Michael confesses. His eyes closed, his cheek resting against her soft flesh. His voice a mere whisper of sound.

"I just sat there, watching. I could not move."

Hesitantly, Nikita lowers a hand to his head and slowly strokes her fingers through his hair soothingly.

Michael nestles closer, "I almost ruined the mission because I had to make sure you were going to win. So, I sat there after Birkoff gave me the okay. Watching, praying, you would win, that you would want to win."

Nikita softly murmurs his name as she continues to stroke her fingers through his hair.

Michael sighs and closes his eyes tighter, hugging her closer to him.

They stay in that position unaware of time until they detect the familiar slope of the van descending into the Section parking.

author’s note: So a few months ago, I posted a high school/university AU for the [community profile] smallfandombang . It was long. I thought that perhaps I'd write an epilogue to wrap everything up. Well, that "epilogue" got pretty long so I decided to make it a sequel. My first story wasn't done and I was already writing a sequel. Correction...I was already writing a third part because the sequel didn't have a happy ending either. The third and final part will get posted some time in the new year. And to think that this all started with the line "Did Madeline suggest you to stay away from me?" Bless you, Roy Dupuis!

Author’s Note: You're not seeing double. Yes, this story has already been posted here. This is a planned, but not planned, second part to that story. Sort of a companion piece. I almost posted it as a separate story, but...I couldn't come up with a title and when I first started writing it, it was a part of that initial piece. It just wasn't ready. Now it is. The "date" pimp session that Petrosian sets up between Michael and Nikita comes and goes pretty quickly in the episode, but it does touch on some pretty interesting character beats from the episode, namely Nikita's flirtation with the perks that Petrosian offers her and how Michael handles powerful women. I've always wondered what Michael and Nikita would talk about if he did stay for that drink. Initially, I didn't know if I could come up with something I liked and that I felt worked. Michael's not exactly known for his small talk and there's the added complication of Petrosian's intentions. Still, it's "just a drink" like Nikita says and with some defined boundaries in place, it's not like Michael is going to humiliate her by leaving. Although I could also see a scenario where Michael suggests they go somewhere else and of their own choosing for that drink. Somewhere that doesn't carry the weight of Petrosian's orders.

Summary: "Should we just have a drink? No more games or promises. Just a drink."

Author’s Note: Do I need every single moment of Michael and Nikita's relationship depicted on the show? No, but I definitely would have preferred that a little more of their courtship be shown. I also didn't appreciate feeling like I blinked and missed something important when I saw the opening teaser to the season 3 episode "All Good Things." Michael, clearly naked and waking up in Nikita's bed. And I definitely would have liked to have seen a little more of what transpired as the opening teaser ended. This fan wants to see her OTP have some happy sexy times together. Someone show me Michael's moves damn it! So, that's what this is. Michael and Nikita completely glowy at the beginning of their relationship before the show throws all the obstacles in their way.

Summary: Nikita comes to a young Michael on the eve of the bombing that will have him sent to prison.

Why this must be read: Who doesn't love the Bathtub Challenge? So many great stories came out of it and this is definitely a very unique entry. LFN fic is usually pretty straight forward. No one ever grows wings in this fandom. (Although there were some stories with Tribbles.) There also really aren't any fanciful or metaphysical dreamscapes. This sort of time bendy story has Nikita visiting a university aged Michael just before L'Heure Sanguine sets off the bombs that lead to Michael's incarceration. Is it time travel? Is it this a connection between these two people that simply transcends time? Or is Nikita a figment of Michael's imagination? Whatever she is, she has clearly visited Michael numerous times and has served as a sounding board for Michael's future plans. If Michael doesn't commit his crime, then he never gets recruited by Section and therefore will never meet Nikita. So enamored with Nikita is Michael that he wonders if his planned actions will cause her to disappear forever. This is a lovely, short and thoughtful story that has really stayed with me. I love the idea of a young Michael having other conversations with this manifestation that he has come to expect and fear the loss of. There's something very poignant about it.

Excerpt: "You came" he sighed gratefully.

"Of course Michael, why would you think I'd leave you now." The husky voice echoed in his ears, stilling the noise in his head as only she could.

"Because of all that I have done, because of what I am about to do."

He moaned at the touch of fingers stroking his chest, tracing circles on stomach. A soapy sponge left slick trails on his skin that were gently washed away with the caress of warm water.

"Then why do you do these things? Why would you risk this fragile peace we share?" she asked.

He kissed her hair, running his fingers down and along the contours of her jaw. She seemed to surround him like the water that lapped against his skin.

"I don't know" he whispered. His mind started racing again as he thought of an answer that might satisfy her. How could he make her understand when he barely understood it himself.

"They are depending on me, I just have to do it, then it will be over."

Summary: 'Close' only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades

Why this must be read: You know what I really love? Stories that take place during Nikita's two year training period. Cool training montage aside, I kinda felt cheated that we never got more time covering that period. That's where this story comes in and it's done so well that I kinda take it as canon. This story covers Nikita's computer training with Birkoff and expands on the deleted scene where she's doing everything but pay attention to his instruction. This story also has the added bonus of interweaving some subtle exploration of Michael's blood cover. Nikita's training coincides with the birth of Adam so it's interesting to see how Michael is pulled in these different directions. I really felt like I stumbled upon a treasure trove when I found this author's livejournal page. I'm in hardcore grabby hands with her fic. I need more. Elena and Adam constantly figure into her stories, even if they're in the periphery. If that's your jam, then you're in for a real treat.

Excerpt: "Nikita had attitude; enough for ten recruits, but she was all over the board. Makoto she liked, and worked hard to please. Walter she challenged, though she was now performing above par. Even progress in her ‘deportment’ lessons with Madeline, while not yet overriding 19 years of neglect, was acceptable; and beneficial. Madeline had instructed Michael to introduce her to Nikita as her “new mother”; and the ploy seemed to be effective. Nikita, though still wary, was forming a sort of maternal or familial connection with Madeline, which the older woman would no doubt later exploit.

It was in Systems that Nikita was failing dismally. Not only did she not follow Birkoff’s instructions, she completely ignored his presence; snapping her gum and rolling around in her chair during her “lessons.” Michael couldn’t seem to make her realize that tactical knowledge was even more important than field work if Nikita wanted to survive as a Cold Op. It wasn’t as if she couldn’t learn; she was certainly intelligent enough. For some reason she just wouldn’t, and that was going to get her cancelled. At five pm tomorrow, barring a miracle.

Nikita was in Systems now; draped over the arms of her chair and spinning in lazy circles. Birkoff couldn’t even get near her. Not that he wanted to after she’d held a stylus to his jugular. Prodigy, genius; whatever his reputation, Birkoff was a skittish 17-year old kid around Nikita."

A few months back I inquired about two of Lila's stories that I had seen referenced at the Voy forums. More specifically With Charity Towards None and The Beginning of the End. Lila herself had posted about ten years ago saying that she was revisiting With Charity Towards None and intended to finish it. From what I could see, nothing materialized on the forums after that announcement.

It was disappointing but I was very interested in reading the stories even in their unfinished WIP state. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a record of them. That is until I used the Wayback Machine using the old Network54 forums link. I was delighted to discover that about half of the story's approximately 54 chapters are still accessible. Not all, unfortunately, but beggars can't be choosers.

I wanted to post my findings here and share them with those who might be interested. However, I don't know if this would be considered crossing the line as far as author consent and online etiquette is concerned. If it is, I will certainly edit or remove this post. I might eventually put it behind a lock so that you have to be logged in to see the post.

Sometimes I think a good rule of thumb is that if you're already feeling off about something, then it might not be a good idea. That's kind of why I'm on the fence about his post.

With Charity Towards None is an AU in which Nikita, a university sociology instructor, is married to Alex Chandler. Much like in the show he has this cover as a generous philanthropist. Michael, Madeline, Operations and co. work for Adrian as part of a task force that combats international wrongdoing such as child slavery. The postings for the story were from 2003. Summary: Whatever you're doing at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve, you will be doing the rest of the year.

Why this must be read: It's the eve of the new millennium. Y2K baby! This story explores the Gelman Process arc and assumes that it lasts a little longer before Michael finds a way to help Nikita undo the conditioning. So there's a mission and Nikita, in her uber efficient ways, is going to do the seducing and the assassinating. I really enjoyed how Michael has observed all the changes that Nikita has undergone and silently vows to himself that in this new year he will find a way to restore Nikita to her former self. The end is especially poignant. As the new millennium washes over them, Michael doesn't take any chances and he lets a bit of optimism dictate his actions.

Excerpt: "He listened as Nikita enticed her mark away from the party for a little privacy. Michael straightened and scanned the room. Bergland's three beefy bodyguards were deep in their cups as they joined their employer's guests in the revelry. They didn't notice him leading the statuesque blond downstairs into the belly of the boat.

Michael followed surreptitiously. He watched and listened as Nikita and Bergland fondled and kissed each other, then disappeared through a doorway. He grimaced as his former lover laughed huskily and sighed pleasurably as Bergland detailed exactly what he was going to do to her before the new millennium arrived. He stood sentry outside the door and gnashed his teeth together as he listened to the unmistakable sound of zippers unzipping and bodies crashing down onto a mattress."

Summary: Michael and Nikita get stuck in a Norwegian cabin during white out blizzard conditions while returning from a mission. With Michael suffering a concussion and Nikita trying to maintain a distance, Nikita's inevitable betrayal looms between them as Michael makes an attempt to close the distance between them.

Why this must be read: This is one of my all time favorite stories. This is a late season 4 story so we are nearing the big reveal of the season 4 finale. The tension between Michael and Nikita is almost a third character. Michael knows that there's something wrong and Nikita is increasingly trying to minimize the hurt by pulling away from Michael. All this causes nothing but pain all around. Michael's attempt to connect with Nikita emotionally is heartbreaking in how useless it ultimately is. Everything has been set into motion and by submitting to Michael's sexual advances and his clear love for her, Nikita sinks further into self hatred. When I first started reading LFN fic this was exactly the type of season 4 story I was looking for. It checked off all the boxes. I cannot recommend this story enough. It's a wonderful piece of writing that I come back to again and again.

Excerpt: Entering the room where Michael was sleeping, she peeled off her mission clothes leaving only her silk long underwear. She never would have believed that something as thin as silk could keep one warm, but she had been sold on it a long time ago. Belgium came to mind. Sliding into the bed and feeling the warmth of Michael's body next to her she forced herself to forget about Belgium.Curling her long body next to Michael's, she allowed herself the luxury of resting her head next to his. She moved close to him, trying not to disturb him, and he responded by simply rolling onto his side and pulling her close. She was certain he was still asleep, but her physical nearness caused his instinctive reaction.

Push him away, don't let him. But she found herself scooting closer to his body, reveling in his warmth. God, he was warm.

She closed her eyes, waiting for Shakespeare's sweet relief of sleep. Instead, she thought about the phone call she received an hour before leaving for this mission.

"It's a go," Mr. Jones said.

"Repeat," she replied, not wanting to hear those words ever.

His Mick persona answered, "One month, it's a go lollipop. Cheerio."

In one month she would betray everyone she ever loved in Section, especially the sleeping figure beside her. A bullet would do right about now, but instead Michael snaked his hand over her abdomen and pulled her closer. His breath warmed her neck, his embrace tight and unforgiving. If only he knew. Exhaustion winning out over castigation she drifted into an uncomfortable sleep.

Chapter Text
~*~

'Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned,
Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.'
"This is Andrea Karsov. She was transferred to Section Two from our Bejing sub-station nine weeks ago. Ever since Andrea's promotion to Level Three, Section Two lost four key operatives on seemingly low-risk missions."

"To all intents and purposes, the missions were perfectly profiled. No hint of incompetence, with one exception. Each of the operatives who died on a mission profiled by Karsov had, at one point or another, been involved in an altercation with her."

Operations pauses, exchanging a pointed look with Madeline before continuing. "Andrea will be joining us tomorrow for an indefinite period."

I study the head and shoulders shot on Operations' wall screen. She's not unattractive, although the brightly dyed red hair clashes with her pale skin. Andrea Karsov is small-boned and petite, like Simone. And Elena.

"Is she in abeyance?"

"No. Section Two has not been able to prove that the anomalies were deliberate, and our counterparts in Bejing have been less than cooperative." He smiles at me cynically. "Their official stance is that she was one of their best profilers, and they were sorry to lose her."

"Are we to evaluate her?"

Summary: Section 1 is a successful advertising company run by Paul and Madeline Wolfe with Nikita as their daughter. Michael is the French art gallery owner looking to hire the ad company for his organization's US expansion.

Why this must be read: This story makes me very happy. It also makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. A good reason for that is that it takes place during the holiday season in New York and the city can be really magical during the holidays. Is this the closest that LFN can ever be to a Hallmark movie? Maybe, but it's also a beautifully written story. The love scenes are heartfelt and sexy. The family dynamic feels lived in. Michael and Nikita meet; Michael and Nikita fall in love and we follow them through their whirlwind romance as they try to juggle a relationship in which they live on two different continents. I love reading about these versions of Michael and Nikita--successful, beautiful, sexy and oh so compatible that everyone they come in contact with sees it. This is a great story to curl up and read on a cloudy winter's day.

Excerpt: Soulful green eyes turned to meet hers. "Good evening," he smiled.

His gaze roamed over her features, lingering on her lips. Then his gaze slipped lower and took in the view of her dress through the opening of her coat, pausing at the lace border, before gliding down the long expanse of long silky legs, before returning to meet her twinkling eyes.

In a hushed, awed tone, he murmured, "You look beautiful, Ni-ki-ta."

Nikita's gaze locked upon Michael's, her breath catching at the furor of sensation that coursed through her. Before she realized what she was doing, her hand had strayed up and gently touched his cheek.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Michael held absolutely still, deeply aware of a longing to have this woman as his own. There was a vitality about her, passion and pure femininity that reached out and enveloped him, stirring in him an overwhelming desire to love her and protect her. The emotions both shocked and confused him. He had never had this powerful of a response to any other woman before -- especially one he had known for such a short period of time.

Coming to her senses, Nikita, gave a small nervous laugh and lowered her hand. "I'm sorry," she stated and was surprised when Michael raised his hand and tenderly cupped her face in his palm. Their gazes locked again, probing, seeking to understand this . . . connection . . . they felt with each other.

Reluctantly Nikita drew back as she recalled that Michael was a client. Michael lowered his hand, but his gaze did not leave her face. He could see by the expression in her eyes that she was just as disconcerted as he was by this bond between them. Hoping to put her at ease, he changed the subject.
