Roy Dupuis at Cannes with "Rumours"

Guy Maddin and Evan and Galen Johnson's "Rumours" had its Out of Competition Gala Premiere Saturday night in the 10PM evening slot. Roy Dupuis walked the red carpet along with his co-stars and the film's trio of directors.
I think everyone can agree that at 61, Roy Dupuis can still get it. His character is described as "hunky", "buff", and "brooding".
Just as I'd hoped, he wore a black on black suit but he did it in a much more different way than usual. His jacket was almost knee length and there was a subtle sash embellishment across his chest that shimmered in the light. I feel like it didn't quite fit him as well as it could have and would have benefited from some additional tailoring. The sleeves at his wrist looked a little too loose. Roy wore his hair up as I kind of expected but I was disappointed that he wore it in pony tail rather than looping the tail in like he's worn it in Toute la vie and A couer battant.
Like all the other cast members, he got his got his own moment in the spotlight during the standing ovation at the end of the screening. There was an afterparty where he also made an appearance.

Countdown to Roy at Cannes
May. 16th, 2024 08:08 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I'm sending positive vibes into the air that Roy will grace us with some sartorial style at the premiere of "Rumours" Saturday night.
Gala screenings require a tuxedo, which is nothing to sneeze at, but I would kill to have Roy show up in a sleek and immaculately tailored black on black ensemble and that mane of his perfectly coifed.
It's something we really haven't seen from him since he played Michael. Still, there is something so cool about the way he wears the fade with the man bun.
Whatever he wears, I'm sure it won't disappoint.

Guess who's going to Cannes!
But the real question is, will Roy walk the red carpet? Out of Competition films do get a red carpet. It's also black tie.
Executive Producer Ari Aster said this to Deadline: “Rumours is stoopid and hilarious and wonderful, and it features the best cast ever assembled. The spirit of Buñuel and Monty Python and overwrought ’70s television (and of course the Maddin/Johnson sensibility, which has no real analogue) is alive and strange.”
The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 14 through May 25th.
The film will premiere Saturday, May 18th at a 10PM Gala Screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals.
Roy's French Dub for LFN in Québec

Here's a fun find that just got posted a few months ago. It's a promo for the premiere episode of the show that aired in Québec. Most importantly, it features Roy's own dubbing of his dialogue in French for the Québec market.
I always thought that Roy's dubbing was used for the French market in general, but I recently saw several scenes from the first season in French and Michael's voice was definitely not Roy's. I guess his only got used for the French Canadian market. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So I guess it was bound to happen but at 60 years old, Roy is now playing a grandfather.
He's currently in production in Manitoba on the wilderness survival story "Hair of the Bear" which "tells the story of a teenager battling anxiety who finds resilience living with her grandfather in the unforgiving wilderness." The movie is scheduled for a 2025 release and is directed by Alexandre Trudeau, brother of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The movie is scheduled for a 2025 release and is directed by Alexandre Trudeau, brother of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Alexandre Trudeau, renowned for his geopolitical documentaries, and James McLellan, a Winnipeg teacher and filmmaker, co-direct this compelling narrative. The film marks their debut in the realm of narrative features. 'Hair of the Bear' weaves an intricate tale of Tori, a teenager grappling with paralyzing anxiety, who finds herself sent to live with her grandfather in the unforgiving wilderness.
The script, penned by McLellan, draws from the rich tapestry of human resilience and adaptation. Trudeau, with his background in exploring global dynamics, discerns a parallel in examining individual human experiences under extreme pressure.
The film boasts a cast that reflects the multifaceted landscape of Canada. Malia Baker, known for her role in 'The Baby-Sitters Club', steps into the shoes of Tori. Roy Dupuis, a seasoned actor celebrated for his performances in 'The Rocket' and 'Shake Hands with the Devil', portrays the grandfather.
The behind-the-scenes team is equally diverse, with Stefan Ciupek, a German cinematographer, lending his expertise to capture the stark beauty and harsh realities of the Canadian wilderness.
As the shoot continues until early March, anticipation for 'Hair of the Bear' continues to grow. Scheduled for a 2025 release, the film promises to deliver a poignant and powerful survival story that resonates with audiences worldwide.
The film's production mirrors the narrative's core themes of endurance and hope. As the cast and crew brave the harsh winter conditions, they embody the spirit of resilience that 'Hair of the Bear' seeks to convey.
In the quiet town of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, a story of survival and transformation is taking shape. 'Hair of the Bear', under the helm of Trudeau and McLellan, promises to be a compelling exploration of the human will to adapt and endure.
As the cameras continue to roll in the snowy wilds, the tale of Tori and her grandfather's struggle against the unforgiving wilderness comes to life. With its diverse cast and crew, and a narrative steeped in resilience and hope, 'Hair of the Bear' is poised to captivate audiences when it hits the screens in 2025.

New Roy Movie: "Rumours" by Guy Maddin
Jan. 12th, 2024 12:21 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that avant garde Canadian director's Guy Maddin's new film has been picked up by Bleecker Street for U.S. distribution this year.
Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander lead the ensemble comedy.
Playback, the Canadian TV and Film industry trade magazine also ran a story. They did cite his work in La Femme Nikita. Yay!
https://playbackonline.ca/2024/01/12/bleecker-street-picks-up-u-s-rights-to-guy-maddins-rumours/
Roy gave an interview in October 2023 where he mentioned the project. It was about to start production in Hungary. He'll be playing the Canadian Prime Minister. Roy previously worked with Guy Maddin in 2015's "The Forbidden Room"
Maddin has had films screen at Sundance (January), the Berlin Film Festival (February), SXSW (March), and the Toronto Film Festival (September). Given his status among Canadian filmmakers there's a good chance that the film will premiere at Toronto. Although with Blanchett and Vikander in the cast perhaps Cannes in May isn't too much of a stretch if the film is ready in time. If it doesn't compete for the Palm 'dOr it could still screen in Un Certain Regard. It's where Roy's "Being at Home with Claude" screened back in 1992.
Guy Maddin's Instagram post singles out Roy alongside Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander and describes him as "legendary Québécois thesp Roy Dupuis"

The film follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a provisional statement regarding a global crisis.
Also featuring in a top role in the pic, which recently wrapped production in Hungary, is Genie Award winner Roy Dupuis (Shake Hands with the Devil). Additional cast includes Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Denis Ménochet (Inglourious Basterds), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Knock at the Cabin), Rolando Ravello (Perfect Strangers), Takehiro Hira (Gran Turismo), and Zlatko Burić (Triangle of Sadness).

New Headshot for Roy Dupuis
Dec. 7th, 2023 09:33 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
While working on the La Femme Nikita wiki (drop by if you haven't already!), I ended up on Roy's Wikipedia page. There was a link that I didn't recognize and it turns out that it's for his Quebec management Premier Role. While poking around I noticed that he had a new headshot that is much more representative of him now, especially with how he wears his hair.
Using the Wayback Machine, his management previously used this headshot for him in 2016 and this one in 2009.
I also noticed that they changed the listing of his hair color from brown to gray.
I often wonder what Roy's headshot during his LFN years was. Peta's absolutely stunning headshot has made the rounds but Roy's remains a mystery, at least to me. My best guess is that he had shorter hair ala his "Scoop" days. There's a blink and you'll miss it photo of Roy in "On Borrowed Time". I'm of the opinion that that is his headshot during this period and the props department used it for Michael's photo ID.
Roy's page also had a link to his acting demo, which was a very pleasant surprise. There's no La Femme Nikita clips and it's all post LFN projects from 2002-2005, but it's a really nice collection of clips.

Roy Dupuis on the cover of Elle Quebec
Apr. 14th, 2023 08:49 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
An extremely pleasant surprise comes our way courtesy of Elle Quebec, who has featured Roy and his girlfriend Christine Beaulieu on the cover of their May 2023 issue.
This is certainly a first. Roy is known to be fiercely protective of his private life. However, he agreed because of their mutual need to promote environmental issues such as conservation, biodiversity, and the impact of hydroelectric development on Quebec's rivers.
There's a small preview of the article on the Elle Quebec website in, of course, French. I've placed a Google translated version beneath the cut as well as a few other photos from the photo shoot.
I really like the cover. I think it's quite stunning.
Also, the last time Roy was in Elle Quebec we got this gorgeous photo. It's the gift that keeps on giving. This magazine certainly doesn't disappoint when it comes to Roy.

Newspaper Opinion Piece by Roy Dupuis
Mar. 12th, 2023 08:20 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Back in December Roy Dupuis wrote an opinion piece that was published in the Quebec newspaper Le Devoir. As co-founder of the Rivières Foundation, he encouraged the provincial government and Hydro Quebec, the province's leading utility company to forego new hydroelectric projects on the Magpie River. Part of the river is already damned but Hydro Quebec maintains that it might still choose to pursue future projects to help with the growing energy needs of the country. Activists in the past have successfully advocated on behalf of the river, citing the negative environmental impact not only on the natural resources but the mostly indigenous communities that are in the region.
The article is in French and you can find it here on Le Devoir's website. I, unfortunately, don't speak French so I've used my browser's translation features to get it in English. I've placed it behind the cut for those interested in reading Roy's stance.
( Does the government lack vision with the Magpie River? )

Take Me To A Nice Place (2020)
Dec. 15th, 2022 02:56 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
After mankind drove itself to the brink of extinction, a zealous lone survivor (Roy Dupuis) hunts his way across remote Canadian landscapes in search of knowledge and materials in order to reshape humanity. Ten years later, a woman (Pascale Bussières) raises 10 same-age children and prepares them for the sacrifices they must make in order to save the human race.
Take Me To A Nice Place is a dystopian Montréal-set movie about a mysterious family in a dying world who destroys the little that remains of humanity in order to create their twisted yet idyllic future.
Starring Canadian icons Roy Dupuis and Pascale Bussières, this 33-minutes length film tells the epic tale of a man killing all humans he encounters, while ten years later, a woman raises 10 kids under a strict regime aimed at creating a first generation of entirely selfless humans.

A teaser trailer is already up on Twitter.
Brain Freeze (2021)
Oct. 31st, 2022 07:08 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Halloween is upon us and I thought it would be appropriate to showcase a recent movie with Roy Dupuis that fits right in with the season, his 2021 dark comedy/satire zombie movie Brain Freeze.
This was a film that was being worked on just as the COVID-19 pandemic was shutting everything down. The production had five days of filming left when lockdowns started. They had to come back months later to wrap up production.

Brain Freeze is actually available for free via several outlets. The movie is in French but there is a dubbed version. Like in a lot of his other projects, Roy does his own dubbing. Both the original French and the English dub are available on YouTube.
Your streaming outlets options include Roku, Tubi and FreeVee. All of them have La Femme Nikita connections. Both Roku and Tubi are the only streaming platforms that have offered LFN for free and FreeVee is currently streaming Troppo with Peta Wilson in a small role.
Roy's character Dan is a security guard for a wealthy gated community located on an island near Montreal. When the local country club uses a special fertilizer to keep the golf course green during the winter months, the chemicals seep into the island's water supply. Anyone consuming water from the island instantly becomes a zombie. Dan ends up working with a local teenager and his baby sister to try and determine how to reverse the contagion's effects. Also along for the ride is Dan's teenage daughter, who ends up a zombie herself.

Dan is very much the straight man to his teenage costar, whose main concern is keeping his cell phone fully charged. Dan also happens to be a survivalist, although he's not a particularly good one. He's not quite there yet.
His home in Montreal is fully stocked with toilet paper, canned food, and weapons of all sorts. When the apocalypse comes, he's ready, at least when it comes to provisions. Early in the film he retreats to his basement to practice his fire making techniques. He tries friction with a fire bow and then flint stones. He fails at all of them. Finally he resigns himself to retrieving a rifle cartridge and uses the gunpowder (hello season 1's 'Rescue). He's successful but let's just say stuff happens. I don't want to spoil it but it made laugh. Dan's fire making attempts are amusing because his lack of skills and insistence to keep trying comes back later in the movie.
Without giving too much away, the ending of the movie does have shades of what might be Section One's approach to a zombie outbreak might be. It was an interesting twist that I hadn't expected.

Inès (2021)
Oct. 22nd, 2022 12:36 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Quebec leading actor Roy Dupuis is mainly known for portraying heroic figures such as Romeo Dallaire in SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL (2007) and Maurice Richard in THE ROCKET (2005). Here, he will stun you with his portrayal of a sexually abusive father who continues to try to psychologically dominate his twenty-year-old daughter as she struggles to break free of his lifelong influence. Director Renée Beaulieu is fearless when tackling controversial subject matter, as evident in her 2018 Borsos entry, THE NATURALLY WANTON PLEASURE OF SKIN (LES SALOPES).
It is impossible not to be deeply moved and troubled, as you witness young Inès try to break away from her shattered past in order to start a new life. Caught up in a symbiotic relationship with her father, Inès (20 years old) embarks on a difficult path to try to escape from this imposing man in order to build her own identity and become an adult woman.
Les Filles de Caleb on Netflix Canada
Oct. 20th, 2022 10:46 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
For those living in Canada, Netflix has recently added the Quebec miniseries Les Filles de Caleb (Caleb's Daughters). Roy costarred in the 20 episode miniseries in 1990. Its huge popularity in Quebec increased his profile tremendously and made him a huge star in the province.

However, its introduction to streaming has had its share of controversy and that has been documented in the Quebecois media. The second episode of the series features a Christmas pageant put on by the local school. To depict one of the three wise men, Roy's character Ovila used blackface. Neflix has pulled that episode entirely from the service.
This has been met with disappointment, not only from Roy but his costar Marina Orsini as well. Given the 19th century rural Quebec setting of the story, they argue that historically, however inappropriate the practice is today, people of that time would have used blackface to portray those characters. They would have preferred that a disclaimer explaining the historical context preface the episode rather than having it removed.
