Summary: "By the time it was midnight in San Francisco, it was already January 1st for her, but no matter how many hours separated them, the new year never really started for her until it started for him."
Why this must be read: I adore this type of post series story. There's an appealing poignancy to it that hits the spot with LFN. Nikita and Michael are still physically apart, but they're never far from each other's minds. It takes the promise from the finale of Michael eventually returning to join Nikita and explores it. Equally so, it explores the possibility that if they bide their time, the promise of a life outside together might be in their future as well. Both scenarios are equally fascinating. This is just a snapshot of their present day. Their future remains to be written, but it's definitely going to be with them together.
Excerpt: But maybe, just maybe, she'd improved Section so she could leave it with a happy heart when the time came.
Michael hadn't said anything else, and she knew he was worried that she'd rebuffed his idea. Each year, she got better at reading the transcontinental silence.
"I'm sure my family would love to see you," she said. "But I hear that San --" she caught herself just in time, "that Albany is lovely. I'm accumulating quite a bit of vacation time myself, and a long visit might be just the thing." Long enough to last the rest of their lives, if she had anything to say about it.
"Do you think you could get away?" The hope in his voice wrapped around her like the strong grasp of his arms.
"It's one of the benefits of being your own boss. I think I can make it happen." She glanced at the timer she'd started when the call connected. 14:30. "I'm afraid I have to run; it's about time for me to head to work."
